Approximately one-third of students in America experience bullying, making it one of the biggest problems in schools, with both bullies and victims affected. Over the past five years, suicide has become the second-leading cause of death for people ages 15-19 in the United States, and the teen suicide rate is increasing. Of particular concern is the sharp rise in suicide among Black youth ages 10 to 24, which was previously stigmatized and not seen as a Black issue.
A report from the CDC examining mental health and suicidal behaviors from 2011 to 2021 reveals that 13% of high school girls had attempted suicide, and 30% had seriously considered it.
These statistics paint a distressing picture of youth mental health, which does not even include other destructive behaviors resulting from their pain.
